Interview: Madeleine Holly-Rosing | Ghost Ship Audio Drama

Welcome back Madeleine, how has production been?

More work than I thought. Hahahaha  But I can officially say I’m now a producer, plus writer, creator, etc.  Writing the script was fun and interesting, and I learned a lot once that was done. I also had to handle contracts, listen to auditions, scheduling rehearsals, and more administrative tasks. But I think we have produced a terrific show.

We mentioned a little bit about this campaign in our last chat. Maybe a refresher would be helpful.

No problem. For those who are unfamiliar with Boston Metaphysical Society, we started as a steampunk supernatural graphic novel and prose series about an ex-Pinkerton detective, a spirit photographer, and a genius scientist who battle supernatural forces in late 1800s Boston.

We are now deep into production of our first audio drama called, The Ghost Ship. It features our main characters Samuel, Caitlin, and Granville as they investigate a mysterious ghost ship which

has sailed into Boston Harbor and kills anyone who tries to board her.

The production team includes the veterans of audio drama, Eddie Louise Clark and Chip Michael of Sage and Savant. It ran for four years, and I’m thrilled to have their expertise for this project. Eddie Louise was also the one who persuaded me to do this, so I blame her. LOL

You were looking for a cast last time, can you tell us about that process. And how you found the right characters for each person.

We received many fabulous auditions, so it was tough to narrow it down. Eddie Louise and Chip have a process that after we selected the finalists, we had them on a ZOOM call to read with each other. It gave us a great idea how the actors played against each other and how they took direction. Other factors to narrow the field down were: Did the actor sound like the character I envisioned in my head, and would their voice compliment the other voices selected? We had to make sure that the various characters didn’t sound alike.

At this stage, what is left to complete BMS TGS?

To date, the voice tracks for all eight episodes are done. By the time the Kickstarter launches, our audio engineer will be working on sound effects and music.

Reward wise with digital copies. Any platforms yet? And could backers get a physical copy?

MP3 downloads will be available as well as flash drives and a CD. As for platforms, no I haven’t decided yet and I probably won’t until we are closer to releasing the audio drama to backers. (Backers always get their stuff first before the general public.)  The reason I haven’t decided on a platform yet is that audio drama platforms are currently very fluid. Larger corporations are buying smaller ones and I don’t know where the business will be when The Ghost Ship is completed. There are a number of opportunities, so I see no reason to make this decision right now.

October 20th sees the launch of this new audio drama separated into 8 Episodes. Is there any cool secret stretch goals for this campaign

We’ll have wallpaper from the cover art, bonuses for the cast and crew, as well as a download of the soundtrack.

Finally, what can we expect from you in the future of 2022?

Wow. A lot. I’m doing a story for Joe Benitez’s Lady Mechanika and possibly another freelance project on the horizon.  Plus, the next Boston Metaphysical graphic novel. But what I really need to carve out time for is finishing up the novel trilogy of Boston Metaphysical Society: The House Wars. The first book is done, but I have two more to do.

Final words for readers?

Keep on the look out for more great things from Boston Metaphysical Society!
